maryam tafakory (b. iran) works with textual and filmic collages, interweaving poetry, ethnography, archival and found material. she is based between london, shiraz and tehran.
interested in fictions of non-fiction, her broader research explores plural and inauthentic subjectivities, the self / other binary, womanhood as well as depictions of erasure, secrecy, [un]touchable and [un]spoken prohibitions.
she completed her masters at Oxford University and her work has exhibited internationally including, Whitechapel Gallery; Rotterdam IFFR; Edinburgh EIFF; Zurich Film Festival; Melbourne MIFF; ZINEBI; Hamburg IKFF; ICA London; BFI London; Ji.hlava IDFF; Kurzfilmtage Winterthur; Barbican Cinema London; Light Industry; UnionDocs; Anthology Film Archives.
her work has been nominated for Tiger Award and Found Footage Award at 47th IFFR, Best Short Award at 67th MIFF and she has received several awards, including the best short film at Documenta Madrid, and was recently invited as the Flaherty/Colgate Distinguished Global Filmmaker in Residence.
her work has been exhibited at Videonale as well as Bloomberg New Contemporaries, and she was awarded two Aesthetica Emerging Art Prize (York) in 2017 and 2019.
